For the past few years I have been trying various branded shampoos and conditioners for my hair, but frankly speaking, none of them work as wonderfully as natural, home made treatments. Firstly, they are a much cheaper option, secondly they provide almost immediate effects on the hair and thirdly you are sparing your hair all the chemicals contained in the shampoos and conditioners. While we all do use shampoos on our hair every other day, it is still worthwhile to use these natural raw materials on the hair once in a while and enjoy their benefits.

I am a fan of using nature’s raw products on my hair and skin and have done some research as to what nutrients are required for healthy hair and what should be the top ingredients providing these nutrients so that I can prepare my hair packs. 🙂

So let us first understand what nutrients do healthy hair really require.

a) Iron – Iron carries oxygen to hair and promotes growth.

b) Vitamin D – This is important for hair follicle cycling.

c) Vitamin B complex such as biotin and folic acid – Biotin produces fatty acids that strengthen the hair follicle. Folic acid increases the cell production of cells that are found in the hair shaft.

d) Vitamin E – Vitamin E is required to nourish damaged hair and to prevent breakage.

e) Protein – Protein smooths the cuticle of the hair, creating smoother strands and stronger hair.

f) Zinc – Zinc is required for regaining hair growth and prevents hair shedding (specially for heavy exercisers and sweaters who lose a significant amount of zinc.)

Upon doing some research I arrived at a list of top ingredients required for a home made hair pack which provide maximum benefits and nourishment for your hair.

Eggs : Eggs are rich in proteins, vitamins, iron and super nurturing fatty acids which make your hair softer, shinier and healthier. They are rich in vitamin A,D and E  and biotin which help thicken hair and prevent hair loss.

Yogurt : Yogurt contains natural milk protein and vitamin D that is good for hair. The protein helps in strengthening hair and the lactic acid and zinc also stimulate blood circulation which in turn aids hair growth. Yogurt has a great moisturizing effect on the hair.

Lemons : Lemon juice is a rich source of vitamin B, C and phosphorus. It is very effective for fighting dandruff and strengthens hair roots.

Olive Oil : Did you know that apart from using it as a cooking oil, Olive Oil can also be applied on the hair. Olive oil contains Vitamin E and fatty acids that keep the hair strengthened and protected.  It is great for fighting dandruff , adding shine and softening your hair.

Some DIY Hair pack recipes are given below which contain all the above mentioned ingredients in different combinations. I have tried all of them and simply love them. I apply them once in 2 weeks.

Hair Pack 1– Egg: 1 (use whole raw egg for normal-to dry hair, use only egg-white if you have oily hair), 2-3 tbsp yogurt (depends on the length of your hair) , 2 tbsp lemon juice.

Hair Pack 2 – Egg: 1 (use whole raw egg for normal-to dry hair, use only egg-white if you have oily hair), Yogurt: 2-3 Table-spoon (depends on the length of your hair) , Olive oil: 2 tea-spoon

Hair Pack 3 – Lemon juice: 2 tbsp lemon juice, Olive oil: 2 Tbsp, Water: 2 tbsp

I mix these ingredients in the above mentioned proportions and apply them on my hair for about 20-30 mins. I then rinse it off with shampoo with lukewarm water. These hair packs are great for keeping your hair healthy, dandruff free and shining!

Cheers..
